Dougie Freedman is looking forward to his first pre season as manager of the Eagles, and he explained why he went local.
Speaking to the Newsshopper Freedman explained that he had chosen the training camp in Exeter because Palace will be doing enough travelling during the season, so he thought it would be far simpler for all concerned to stay local and do away with plane journey's, exotic food and new languages.
Obviously with Palace's financial situation, there was also an added advantage there in saving some money so it can be better spent elsewhere.
'I wanted a lot of local competition, we do enough travelling throughout the year, so I picked my pre season down at Exeter, the lads will be comfortable with it and we'll go there and train hard.'
Freedman also explained that in his choice of local pre season friendlies he wanted to make sure that it was well within travelling distance for the fans, but also that it provided the right sort of growing test for the lads as we bid to break our relegation battles of the last few seasons.
Importantly for fans, Freedman also adds that he's hoping to change our style of play slightly so we are a touch easier on the eye and pre season will be the perfect place to make those changes.
'I'm looking forward to maybe changing the way we play. We can start afresh because we aren't scrapping for our lives, so we can maybe express ourselves a little more.'
Definitely going to be interesting to see what Dougie can do with the team given a full preseason campaign and a fresh start in the league. Even if we only gain 2 or 3 places in the league we will be moving in the right direction finally, anything more than that would surely be a bonus.
