'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Academy Futures At Stake

Dougie Freedman has said the decision the FA's Tribunal makes on the compensation for Nathaniel Clyne will have a direct impact on whether Football League clubs continue with Academies.

Speaking to London24 Freedman said that Tribunal's are set to play a very important part in the future of Academies - especially in the world of the EPP now - where league clubs will need to be properly compensated for training up players.

As said previously you only have to look at the fees Southampton have received when selling players, and then compare that to the experience Clyney has, and £5m really would not be an unfair price when you compare them together.

If for example the Tribunal set a nominal fee of a £1m for example, it makes a complete mockery of the system, and Football League clubs will lose far more than they gain overall by producing talent.

Some will argue we should've cashed in whilst he was under contract, but clubs should be able to trust a Tribunal to set a fair fee irrespective of that.

'His contract ran out, Clyney was offered a contract that would have made him the highest earner here. He refused which is his prerogative. We can be very proud of what we've done, the rules are the rules and we need to abide by them. If you can't agree a fee, you go to a tribunal. If a Premier League club offer him big money, that's fine but we need to be compensated appropriately. If we're not then the whole of the Football League will look into whether their academies are worthwhile.'
