'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Pulis Now Looking To The Future

With continuing stories about the relationship between our manager and co owner and his future at the club after helping us to avoid relegation this season, manager Tony Pulis has again dismissed suggestions that he and Steve Parish don't get on, or clash, or whatever the current use of phrase is, and revealed that he's now due to sit down with the board and start formulating plans for next season.

Speaking to the press ahead of our game against Manchester City on Sunday, Pulis explained.

'My relationship with the chairman was a bit tetchy at the beginning. I was getting used to Steve and he was getting used to me. But since that period it's been fantastic. Just look at the players we brought in the last transfer window.'

A fairly obvious comment, any business relationship takes time to evolve when it's new and a chairman and manager will always clash at points, but it doesn't mean there is a bad relationship there, whilst both parties exist to provide and do the best for the club, there is a separation of priorities at points, and it's about working round those and finding compromises that suit, and it seems Pulis is happy with the ones he and Steve can now work out between them and it should stand us in good stead moving forward now.

'I wanted those players (in January) and Steve went and got them for us. There was no messing about, he's been fantastic.'

Of course having now secured our Premiership status for 2014-15, Pulis is turning his eye to next season and further strengthening so we can kick on and if not push up the table much next campaign, at least consolidate our position and be safer sooner in the season, because he knows that now we are safe he doesn't want the team to step off in our remaining games, and he certainly doesn't want to see our most recent run of form give rise to any complacency next season - on a personal level he wants to keep his record of never being relegated.

'Now it's about sitting down with Steve and the board and talking about the way they see us going forward. I've done it Stoke - we got promoted and improved year after year until they became an established Premier League club who should never be in danger of being relegated. But if you start patting yourself on the back in football someone will kick you up the backside. It's very important we keep our feet on the ground.'

You look at the table and those teams below us who would consider themselves established Premiership sides and Pulis' point is made really. Focus on quality additions this summer to directly improve the first team, whilst continuing to develop our youth players into the wider squad fillers and we should kick on as e more than have the nucleus of the team now.

A big part of that will be contract extensions as well, but having survived now - and it's already begun - we are going to be linked with every Tom, Dick and Harry over the coming months, so we shouldn't get too carried away with 'targets' until they truly appear.
