Kiely Appointed As Goalkeeping Coach

Kiely Appointed As Goalkeeping Coach

Over the weekend Roy Hodgson appointed Dean Kiely as our new first team goalkeeping coach.

Kiely is a former Republic of Ireland international from his playing days and prior to hanging up his gloves he won eleven international caps on top of 664 club appearances during a 21 year playing career.

Having stepped into the world of coaching he worked with Hodgson previously during his time at West Bromwich Albion and since leaving The Hawthorns he's worked at Norwich City and Preston North End.

Speaking to Crystal Palace FC as news of his appointment broke, Hodgson explained.

'I`m really pleased to be teaming up again with Dean Kiely with whom I worked at West Bromwich Albion. I think it`s very good we`ve been able to replace Martyn Margetson with such an experienced and talented goalkeeping coach so that we maintain the quality of the teamwork behind the team. I`m indebted to the Chairman and Sporting Director Dougie Freedman for the work they put in to make his move from Preston possible, and I`m also pleased Dean has wanted to seize this chance to work again in the Premier League where I believe his talents as a goalkeeping coach belong.'

Kiely himself said of his arrival.

'I was one of Roy`s coaches at West Brom during a very successful time there once again at Premier League level and when I got the chance to come down here the connection is obviously part of the decision and it was an easy answer to say yes to the chance of coming down. I was thoroughly enjoying my time up at Preston North End and have worked with their manager, Alex Neil, across a good period of time but it`s great to have the opportunity to be back in the Premier League.'

With just under 250 appearances for Charlton during his playing days, he's also keenly aware of the rivalry and the passion of the fans.

'I have been involved in some really lively affairs in derby games with Charlton Athletic and as professional footballer those are the type of matches you want to be part of and can remember some great contests over the years with Crystal Palace.'

Kiely obviously replaces Martyn Margetson who departed for Everton in December.
